Sometimes It's the Small Things

There are four things which are little on the earth,
But they are exceedingly wise:
The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer;
The rock badgers are a feeble folk, yet they make their homes in the crags;
The locusts have no king, yet they all advance in ranks;
The spider skillfully grasps with its hands, and it is in kings’ palaces.
Proverbs 30:24-28

At times we get caught up in the grandeur of the enormity of God's creation as we gaze across the Arkansas River Valley from atop Mt Nebo or Petit Jean or from Subiaco Abbey. All of these views are incredibly awe inspiring. The beauty of it all
declares the majesty and splendor of God's creation. It is not difficult to see these sights and similar sights around the world and whisper Psalms 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” But, there are examples of God’s glorious creativity in smaller things.

Take the sharpshooter leafhopper. This little insect makes its living by sucking juices from
plants. They do not do any horrible, long lasting damage to garden plants, but to watch and interact with these little pests will leave one in a fit of chuckling delight or frustration if you are actually attempting to lay hands on one! They can jump incredible distances with pinpoint accuracy. To see one jump from one plant to another ten or more feet away and instantly disappear, can leave one disappointed and frustrated with a healthy dose of  amazement. If the pursuit is carried to the presumed new location, the frustration/amazement continues. Upon detecting the pursuer, the leafhopper will scurry to the opposite side of the leaf or stem that they are on. If the pursuer moves hand and fingers to the insect, it will scurry to the opposite side of whatever they are on, or take another amazing jump to another plant. They are amazing little creatures!

From small to large, the Earth and Heavens proclaim the majesty, glory, and existence of God. I will leave you with the words of the Psalmist in Chapter 104 verse 24, “O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all.”
